In this post, I’ve compiled an updated list of the best rated earphones and headphones for 2012.
One of the best sports earphones available. Etymotic succeeds in creating a balanced realistic sound. Bass-enthusiasts may be disappointed with the thin reproduction of low-frequencies. CNET rates them “Very Good” and iLounge gave them a “A-” rating.

Gradio SR80i Headphones

Average Amazon Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (from 330+ reviewers)

The Grado SR60 headphones are made in Brooklyn. Their black-plastic design doesn’t exactly exude high tech, but as soon as doubters hear the SR80, their objections usually melt away. Converts gush about the headset’s rock-solid bass, extraordinary detail, and clarity. The SRS0 has been on the market for more than 10 years, perennially garnering raves in audiophile magazines around the world.

The SRS0′s earpieces have large cushions, but we’re not about to claim that these headphones set a new standard for wearability. After spending a few hours with all that foam clamped over your ears, you’ll need a break.

Buy the Grado SR60 Amazon for around $100.

Grado SR125i Headphones

Average Amazon Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (from 64+ reviewers)

Basically, the Grado SR125 is a slight upgrade to the SR80i — the SR125 is tweaked for slightly better sound. The improved detail can be difficult for some to hear. Grado makes use of the larger sized 1/4 inch plug on this headphone and a very thick cord. Grado doesn’t really intend this headphone for use with a portable MP3 player, but if you want to connect to a portable player or an inexpensive home stereo with the smaller 1/8th inch connection, you’ll need to get an adapter. Whether the sound quality is any better than the SR80i might depend on the quality of the recording and the quality of your music player.

It’s available from Amazon for about $200.

I haven’t seen any formal reviews of this headphone yet.

The ATH-M50 is available at Amazon for about $137.

The sound reproduction of the phones is apparently very good — the bass, in particular, being quite impressive.

The AIAIAI TMA-1 gets an “Excellent” rating from CNET and an average of 4.7 out of 5 reviewers from 26 reviewers on Amazon.

Average Amazon Rating: 4.5 out of 5 (from 175+ reviewers)

Bowers & Wilkins is a legendary name in British Hi-Fi. Recently, they have been attempting to appeal to a more mainstream audience. Thier P5 Headphone is made for listening with a portable player. These headphones block out a lot of external noise, but they contain no active noise-cancellation circuitry. However, CNET only gives them a “Good” rating, saying that they just sound “OK” and that the headphone’s noise-cancellation feature was not impressive. Still, the ATH-ANC7B gets an impressive Amazon rating of 3.9 of 5 stars from 355+ reviewers.

Today, water lovers can bring their tunes with them and still get quality sound. Not just for swimmers, waterproof headphones are beneficial for all sports enthusiasts since they are also sweatproof and can be rinsed off after use. By reading reviews across the web (iLounge and CrunchGear are good sources), we’ve come up with a list of the top rated waterproof headphones.

H2O Audio Surge 2G Waterproof Headphones

H2O Audio Surge 2G Waterproof Sport Headphones

H2o Audio, an innovator in developing underwater accessories, has recently released their improved Surge 2G waterproof headphones that come highly recommended by iLounge. These are the headphones used and endorsed by Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. They are 100% waterproof for underwater submersion up to 12 feet and can be rinsed after a strenuous workout. Five sets of varying sized rubber tips are provided to find the right fit. According to iLounge, these earbuds form a more complete seal in the ear than other headphones they’ve tested. Also compared to other underwater options, the H2o Audio Surge 2G offers an unparalleled sound with a sound-isolating fit and bass amplified neodymium drivers to provide a balanced quality both above and below the water.

The plug is designed to fit into H2O Audio’s waterproof armbands and cases so is only compatible with the iPhone 3G and all iPod models. For other Mp3s or the original iPhone you’ll need a case with a pass-through port or an adapter.

The H2o Audio Surge 2G waterproof headphones retail for $49.99, but are currently on sale at Amazon for $25.59. Comes with a waterproof carrying case. Also offered is a model with a built-in waterproof microphone for around $50.00 here.

Aquapac Waterproof Headphones

Aquapac Waterproof Headphones

The Aquapac waterproof headphones that operate at an underwater depth of 30 feet, but are not advised for use beyond 10 feet due to pressure on the ear. Underwater headphone testers at iLounge gave the Aquapacs a B rating. They were impressed by the sound quality both above and below the water. The silicone tips create a seal in the ear to prevent water from getting in, though the one downside to the Aquapacs are that they only come with one size tips that will fit average sized ears.

The Aquapac waterproof headphones come with a buoy and keychain cord keeper.

You can get them on Amazon for about $24.

Audio Bone Waterproof Headphones

Audio Bone Waterproof Headphones

The Audio Bone headphones use bone conduction technology which allow the user to wear the headphones on the outside of their ears. Since we hear differently while submerged in water, this technology completely bypasses the ear drum by converting sound waves into vibrations. There are pros and cons to this type of headphone and after reading reviews by those who have tried them, people either love them or hate them.

Bone Conduction Technology

One of the cons is the price. The audio bone headphones retail for $189.00. However, these headphones do transfer well to all activities, such as cycling or even listening at work, since it allows you to still be able to hear other things going on around you. Another con is that bone conduction is a less efficient way for us to hear, therefore your iPod or Mp3 will generally need to be on the highest volume setting which can cause the battery to drain faster. Some users report a muffled sound quality, while others like that they can still hear outside noise. Your personal preference would depend upon the intended use. Also, many people don’t like the feel of earbuds so the Audio Bones are a perfect match for them. You can read a full review at the Gadgeteer and CrunchGear.

The Audio Bone Waterproof Headphones are currently on sale at Amazon for $141.82.

Budget Pick: H2O Audio Flex Underwater Headphones

H2O Audio Flex Underwater Headphones

These Flex headphones are the newest entry from H2O Audio and our budget pick for a waterproof headphone. These would be a good option for someone who needs waterproof headphones from time to time, perhaps for sweaty workouts, occasional laps in the pool, or just lying in the bath. They are submersible up to 3 feet underwater. Amazon reviewers complained about the fit with these headphones, though they do come with 3 bud sizes. As one reviewer pointed out, be sure to wipe out your ear so that it’s dry before inserting the buds. This will help create a stronger seal and they won’t slip out as easily. Also, wear the wires on your back and insert the headphones from behind your neck. The sound is of good quality and is well-balanced. Those who prefer a strong bass won’t get it here, but again, the price is key. For a full review on the H2O Audio Flex click here.

The H2O Audio Flex underwater headphones come in a choice of 5 cool colors and are on sale at Amazon for $19.41.

Waterproof iPods Cases

H20Friendly 100% Waterproof iPod Shuffle Case

If you spend a lot of time in the water, you may want to consider investing in a fully waterproof system. Companies such as H2oFriendly and Swimman will waterproof an iPod shuffle from the inside out so you can take it right into the water without use of a bulky case. User reviews for both of these systems are excellent both for quality and for ease of use. H2OFriendly offers a 1 year waterproof warranty and you can purchase just the 4th generation 2 GB iPod shuffle or a complete system which includes Velcro securing straps that clip onto goggles and underwater headphones, as well as the original iPod shuffle packaging.

The H2OFriendly Swim System sells for $169.95 on Amazon. Or just the silver waterproof iPod goes for $143.95 on Amazon. You can also order straight from the company’s website if you’d like a choice of iPod colors: green, orange, blue, silver, or pink.

Swimman Underwater Music System

Swimman has an excellent reputation among swimmers and they are currently waterproofing 3rd generation iPod shuffles. At $250.00, their system is more than the H2oFriendly, but they do include a waterproof control adapter and their underwater headphone set boasts superior sound quality similar to top-of-the-line non-waterproof headphones. To purchase Swimman order directly from their website. You can also purchase their headphone set separately for $100.00 here.

We surveyed the reviews on CNET, PCWorld, PC Magazine, Wired, Gear Diary, and Amazon to create this list of the top rated wireless portable headphones:

LG Tone HBS-700 Wireless Earbud Headphone ($45)

Despite selling for under $50, the LG Tone HBS-700 is one of the top rated bluetooth headphones. It received an 8 out of 10 rating from CNET, which makes it their Editor’s Choice for a bluetooth headphone. CNET says it was one of the most comfortable headphones they’ve tried, and that the audio reproduction was impressive. Amazon buyers also liked this headphone — it received an average of 4.5 of out 5 stars, from a total of 264 reviewers. PC Magazine liked the long battery life on the headphone, but said that the bass reproduction was “thin”, and gave it an overall rating of “Good”.

The LG Tone HBS-700 is available from Amazon for about $45.

Nokia BH-905 Wireless Portable Headphones ($200)

Pros:

Features active noise cancellation

Lightweight and comfortable, folds flat

Balanced sound

Versatile for use with various devices

Cons:

Slightly bulky for portability

Top Review Sources:

CNET: 4 out of 5 stars; Excellent

PCMag: 3.5 out of 5 stars; “Solid performer”

Amazon: Average 4 out of 5 stars, based on 66 customer reviews

Another versatile set of wireless headphones, the Nokia BH-905 can be used with or without the active noise canceling feature, with or without Bluetooth, and can be plugged in for wired sound. The design has been praised for comfort and would be good for travel, though the earpads are on the bulky side when compared to other portable headphones. However, the numerous navigation controls are easy to use. Eight microphones are discretely placed for active noise canceling and two microphones for phone calls.

The Nokia BH-905 are for sale on Amazon.

TDK WR700 Wireless Portable Headphones ($109)

Top Review Sources:

CNET: 3.5 out of 5 stars; Very good; “Delivers good sound for a reasonable price”

PCWorld: 4 out of 5 stars; “Excellent build and sound quality”

Amazon: Average 4 out of 5 stars, based on 19 customer reviews

The TDK WR700 wireless portable headphones use Kleer technology instead of Bluetooth which delivers digital audio without compression as Bluetooth does. The transmitter is used to connect the headphones with your music player and while there is no need to pair the device like with Bluetooth, the use of the transmitter can take something away from the portability factor. The range of around 33 feet is about the same as Bluetooth. The use of AAA batteries is helpful if you don’t have recharging access and TDK says the headphones will get about 30-40 hours of playtime before batteries need changing.

The TDK WR700 are for sale on Amazon.

Many of us like to listen to music while doing vigorous activity. Until recently, the only solution was to deck yourself in a tangle of headphone wires. Those wires can be quite cumbersome while running, biking or snowboarding. Apple hasn’t announced plans to incorporate bluetooth into iPods in the near future.

But there’s a wireless solution to this problem: attach a bluetooth adaptor to an iPod, and transmit your sounds to a set of bluetooth earphones. But, why not use an iPhone instead of an iPod and a bluetooth adapter? If weight is a priority, the tiny iPod nano is much lighter than an iPhone. For those of you who like a larger selection of music, an iPod classic can store up to 160 GB of music (rather than the maximum of 32 GB on iPhones).

Here are our recommended devices to create this bluetooth set-up:

i10s Bluetooth Transmitter For iPod

The i10s Bluetooth Transmitter plugs direclty into an iPod nano or classic. It pairs very easily with bluetooth devices, and the only downside is that it draws power from the iPod battery. The transmitter support volume adjustment and supports Receiver Remote AVRCP commands (Play, Pause, Next, Previous). It retails for $50.

The i10s Bluetooth Transmitter is available from Amazon.

The New Trent IMP500 is a 5000 mAh external battery for the iPhone 4. The IMP500 is also compatible with the iPod Touch and Classic as well as the majority of modern smartphones. It will charge a Kindle, Nintendo DS, or Sony PSP with separate, non-included adapters. The manufacturer claims the IMP500 will increase the iPhone 4’s battery life 300%—25 total hours instead of the iPhone’s usual 6. Reviewers generally confirm this claim; there are very few complaints of battery underperformance. Some reviewers point to the smallness of the included mini- and micro-USB adapters and express concern over their tendency to disappear, but this is not a widespread criticism. The IMP500 features a charge indicator and retractable USB cable with AC wall charger. The IMP500 weighs six ounces and has dimensions of 4” H x 3” W x 0.75” D.

The New Trent IMP500 is currently available on Amazon for about $40.

The Juice Pack Air is a form-fitting protective case/external battery combo. You charge it via the included USB cord — the Juice Pack Air doesn’t need to be removed to be recharged. A four-LED indicator on the bottom gives you a report on remaining power. The Juice Pack Air comes in two pieces — you slide your iPhone into the case, then slide on the top edge of the case to lock it all together. The Juice Pack Air provides power to your iPhone only when you flip its side switch. Cutouts for volume, headphones, camera, etc. are well-aligned when the Juice Pack Air is in place. Despite its sleek profile, the Juice Pack Air will noticeably swell your iPhone 4. With the Juice Pack Air installed, the dimensions are 5.07” H x 2.51” W x 0.68” D—without it, the iPhone 4 measures 4.5” H x 2.31” W x 0.37” D. The Juice Pack Air increases total weight from 4.8 to 7.3 ounces.

The speed at which the Primo Power Core charges devices is a big selling point; its 2.1-amp maximum output capacity is higher than most devices of this type and is capable of recharging gadgets noticeably faster. The Primo Power Core has a single USB charging port. Use the included USB cable and eight charging tips to connect your iPhone or other mobile device. The Primo Power Core also includes a 12v output port, useful for electronics like netbooks. Inside the box you’ll find a carrying case and AC adapter.

We’ve surveyed reviews on TestFreaks, Gear Patrol, Home Entertainment Magazine, Amazon, TigerDirect.com and Newegg.com to find the top rated wireless outdoor speakers:

Soundcast OutCast ($849)

Top Review Sources:

TestFreaks: 9/10 “The OutCast is just simply an amazing product that you’ve got to see and hear to believe”

Gear Patrol: “The Outcast was the best outdoor wireless speaker solution we’ve ever encountered”

Home Entertainment Magazine: “Its price tag accurately reflects its performance”

You’ll have a good idea of what you are getting yourself into upon receiving the large and heavy Soundcast OutCast box. Inside you’ll find the OutCast speaker itself—an 11-inch cylinder standing over two feet high and weighing close to 26 pounds—and the iCast transmitter, which wirelessly broadcasts music from an iPod or other device. The OutCast has a row of buttons on its top for volume, play, pause, seek, and its blue external mood light. While all these buttons are enabled when an iPod is hooked up, if you want to use another MP3 player, computer, or television, only the volume and light functions will work.

The OutCast is powered either by the included AC adapter or 10-hour rechargeable battery pack. The iCast transmitter accepts an iPod via its top-loading dock, and it also accepts any audio device with a 3.5mm output. The iCast broadcasts in 2.4 GHz, has a stated range of up to 350 feet, and runs on AC power. You can also plug a 3.5mm source directly into the OutCast itself. The high price tag is backed up by sound quality and quantity that blows away most reviewers. The OutCast consistently delivers strong bass and sharp treble. It is built to withstand any bad weather that may suddenly descend upon your outdoor gathering.

The OutCast is available from Amazon.

Consider the Brookstone Wireless Outdoor Speaker if you need a compact, well-built speaker than is easy to move and can connect to a variety of devices. The Brookstone Wireless Outdoor Speaker receives positive reviews for its sound reproduction, though there are some complaints that the treble can’t keep up with the bass at high volumes. The unit is weather-resistant and can receive signals from its wireless dock up to 150 feet away. The wireless dock will connect to any MP3 player or stereo system. The dock can be powered either by the included AC adapter or by six AA batteries. The speaker runs from either AC power or eight D batteries. On-speaker controls include volume, bass boost, and blue ambient light switch. The Brookstone Wireless Outdoor Speaker operates on the 900MHz band.

Purchase the Brookstone Wireless Outdoor Speaker from Amazon.

Another in the portable speaker mold, the Jawbone Jambox is small, but packs a punch when it comes to sound quality. Its attractive design has made it a hit with many reviewers, yet they have been quick to point out that it matches this with sound quality and power. By connecting via Bluetooth to any enabled music device, it can also be used as a speaker phone. With impressive low end capabilities the Jambox provides good sound quality in any environment, and does not distort at loud volumes. What has been noted as it’s only con by reviewers is its price; falling a little too high for a product of its type.

The Jawbone Jambox is available from Amazon.

The Audiovox Acoustic’s main attraction is that it doesn’t look like a speaker. With its design, it is a more natural choice for one’s garden than other speakers, and does not stand out of place. While the sound quality is reportedly adequate, it is not going to match that of a $600 or $700 speaker system. The Audiovox’s range, at approximately 100 to 150ft, is impressive and suggests a product with a quality build. This is reiterated by its durability; both waterproof and solid, this speaker is more than able to survive the weather of the outdoors. While there are few expert reviews of this speaker, the numerous user reviews are all incredibly enthusiastic, and almost entirely positive.

Bluetooth technology allows you to wirelessly connect your digital music player, mobile phone, laptop, or tablet to external speakers, giving a big boost to the sound quality and volume of your device. Bluetooth speakers will also work with desktop computers and some home A/V equipment, but they are primarily designed with portability in mind.

Some will fit in your pocket and have batteries that last all day. Once you complete a simple pairing process, any of our recommended Bluetooth speakers is ready to go. By consulting sites such as Macworld, CNET, The New York Times, iLounge, and Phone Arena, we’ve come up with this list of the top rated bluetooth speakers of 2011:

Soundfreaq Sound Platform ($180)

Currently, the Sound Platform by Soundfreaq is the top rated Bluetooth speaker dock, getting good reviews from CNET, iLounge, Pocket Lint and MacLife. CNET gives it a overall rating of “Very Good”, saying:

You’ll have a hard time finding a more stylish and feature-packed speaker choice in this price range. The inclusion of Bluetooth support makes it an attractive buy for iPad and smartphone owners.

Amazon reviewers also liked the Sound Platform, it received an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars, from over 100 reviewers.

Sound Platform by Soundfreaq is available on Amazon for $180.

Soundmatters FoxL v2 Bluetooth ($200)

Top Review Sources:

Macworld: 4.0/5.0 “The FoxL’s sound is jaw-droppingly big, in dramatic inverse proportion to its size”

CNET: 4.0/5.0 “The fidelity and build quality make it a worthwhile purchase for serious audiophiles on the run”

New York Times: “This fascinating, coat-pocketable metal speaker oozes quality”

The Soundmatters FoxL v2 Bluetooth shocks reviewers by generating robust sound despite its small size. This candy bar-shaped wireless speaker includes technology to improve its wireless range and signal quality (two issues that particularly affect Bluetooth speakers), plus a built-in speakerphone for teleconferencing. The FoxL v2’s bass can be forceful enough to overpower its small frame, resulting in the device vibrating its way across a table if you don’t use the included rubber mat. Also available to stabilize the unit are a kickstand and rubber feet. The physical buttons are limited: an on/off switch and volume control. You’ll rely on your music player to switch tracks or pause playback. The FoxL v2 includes a rechargeable battery, AC adapter, mini-USB port (for slower, computer-based charging), and a 3.5mm line-in port. Battery life is estimated at five hours.

The Soundmatters FoxL v2 Bluetooth is available on Amazon.

Altec Lansing InMotion SoundBlade ($190)

Altec Lansing InMotion SoundBlade

Top Review Sources:

Macworld: 4.0/5.0 “There’s none of the tinniness found in many speakers of this size”

Amazon: 4.0/5.0 (90+ reviews)

LAPTOP Magazine: 3.5/5.0 “The SoundBlade’s strongest asset is its sound separation”

The tablet-like Altec Lansing InMotion SoundBlade is on the larger side of Bluetooth speakers, but it makes the most of its size with expansive sound. Bass response is excellent for a Bluetooth speaker. Aside from its top-notch sound quality, the SoundBlade impresses with great ergonomics: the black buttons on the top edge are clearly labeled and include all the necessary functions (volume, play, pause, seek, and accept call). When not plugged in, the SoundBlade can operate for 24 continuous hours on six AA batteries. There is also a 3.5mm jack for wired sources, plus a pop-out stand in the back.

The Altec Lansing InMotion SoundBlade is available on Amazon.

Creative D100 ($65)

Creative D100

Top Review Sources:

CNET: 4.0/5.0 “Impressive low-end range…[makes] it a worthwhile addition to your next outdoor get-together”

iLounge: B+ (Recommended) “Sonically, the D100 is surprisingly robust for its price”

Amazon: 4.0/5.0 (70+ reviews)

The Creative D100 is a compelling value. It is capable of filling a room with undistorted music at high volume, delivering sound quality that is a few notches above what reviewers expect at this price point. The D100 operates on AC power or on four AA batteries for up to 25 hours. The D100 matches the wireless range of much more expensive models, and its pairing procedure is among the easiest out there. There is a 3.5mm auxiliary port for wired connections. While more expensive models offer smaller and sturdier housings, the D100 is tough enough to move around frequently and comes in your choice of four color schemes: black/black, green/white, blue/white, and pink/white.

You can purchase Creative’s D100 on Amazon.

SuperTooth Disco ($122)

SuperTooth Disco

Top Review Sources:

CNET: 4.0/5.0 “A solid alternative to the classic three-piece computer speaker set”

Amazon: 4.5/5.0 (20+ reviews)

Phone Arena: “We’re actually surprised to hear such rich tones being pumped out…but even more [surprised] when it’s able to powerfully echo throughout a room”

Reviewers like the SuperTooth Disco because its sound quality, battery life, and design make it seem like a bargain for its relatively low price. At a foot long and about 2.5 pounds, the Disco is less portable than many other Bluetooth speakers, yet its responsive bass and room-filling volume make listeners forget about its form factor. Reviewers also appreciate the rechargeable battery, which allows the Disco anywhere between three and ten hours of continuous playback (depending on volume). Like all the speakers reviewed here, the Disco includes a 3.5mm jack for wired inputs, plus a selection of physical buttons you can use to control playback directly from the speaker. Pairing is straightforward, though keep in mind that you can’t use the Disco as a speakerphone.

The SuperTooth Disco is available on Amazon.

JBL On Stage Micro Speakers

The JBL On Stage Micro provides solid sound quality with a tiny footprint. It features an iPod dock in the center as well as a 3.5mm plug for connecting other inputs, plus a clever touch button system and a remote control that make track selection and volume adjustments easy. Aluminum transducers driven by neodymium magnets are paired with digital amplifiers to provide rich sound while extending battery life. Four AAA batteries provide 24 hours of play. The On Stage Micro is compatible with rechargeable NiMH and lithium cells, and it features a low battery indicator LED. Plus, the On Stage Micro speaker system comes in a range of color options to match your iPod: white, black, blue, green, and red.

The JBL On Stage Micro is available at Amazon. Prices start at $72.50, depending on color.

iHome iHM77 Portable Multimedia Speakers

These rubberized mini speakers from iHome each measure just 2” x 2” x 2” when collapsed for transport, then pop open when in use with a clever accordion design. Vacuum bass design enhances low frequency tones, and the iHome speakers magnetically attach to one another to form a super-portable capsule. Power comes from internal lithium-ion batteries that can be recharged using the included USB cord, and a carry case and cord wrap are included with the speakers.

The iHome iHM77 Portable Multimedia Speakers are available in black, silver, and red from Amazon, starting at $46.80.

Harmon/Kardon Go + Play

The Go + Play from Harmon/Kardon may not be the smallest or cheapest option for a portable speaker system, but it delivers serious sound quality thanks to its 30-watt tweeters and 30-watt Atlas woofers. Its 9” x 9.5” x 20” dimensions are substantial, but a stainless steel carry handle and battery power keep it portable. It features the universal iPod dock system that is compatible with most dockable iPods (see note below) plus a 3.5mm jack for other connections. The Go + Play comes with an AC power adapter for indoor use, and a full-featured RF remote with a 20-foot range. And although eight D batteries add bulk to the system, they provide approximately 20 hours of power.

You can find the Harmon/Kardon Go + Play at Amazon for $216.90.

This mobile variation of their popular SoundDock system features a carry handle, a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, and a retractable iPod connection/charging dock (in addition to a 3.5mm plug for other devices). The SoundDock is over 12” wide and weighs over five pounds, so it’s not as compact or portable as some of its competitors, and it doesn’t come cheap – but it offers legendary Bose sound quality and an iPod-specific design. Battery life is roughly three hours at maximum volume (longer at lower levels); an AC adapter is included for battery charging and using the SoundDock at home, and a remote control gives added convenience.
